Why Replacing Your Ceiling Electrical Box Is Important

When installing a chandelier, it’s easy to focus on how it will look—but it’s just as important to make sure it’s securely supported. That support comes from a small but critical piece: the ceiling electrical box.

⚠️ The Problem: Old or Worn Boxes Can Fail

  • Decades old and possibly degraded
  • Improperly rated for heavier fixtures
  • Stripped or rusted mounting tabs
  • Plastic boxes that become brittle or cracked over time

Chandeliers hang from just two screw holes (“ears” or “tabs”). If those holes are stripped or loose, the entire fixture can sag, shift, or fall.

🔧 What’s Included — and What’s Not

✅ We always inspect the existing ceiling box as part of our chandelier installation process.

Ceiling box replacement is NOT included in our standard quote unless specifically requested and approved beforehand.

If your current box is damaged, improperly rated, or unsafe, we will recommend replacing it. This upgrade involves additional parts and labor and will be quoted separately before proceeding.

Please note: We are not responsible for any damage, fixture failure, or safety issues that result from declining a recommended ceiling box replacement.

🛠 Why Replacement Is Worth It

  • UL-rated and chandelier-approved support
  • Secure threading for mounting hardware
  • Meets modern electrical code
  • Prevents ceiling damage, fixture sway, or detachment

💲 Ceiling Box Replacement — Pricing & Process

This service involves shutting off power at the breaker, disconnecting all wiring (ground, neutral, hot), removing the old box (which may be screwed, nailed, or hanging from a bar), and installing a new UL-rated metal box suited to the weight and support needs of your chandelier.

Boxes may be mounted to a ceiling joist or hung between joists using a support bar. Some installations require attic access, which may increase labor time and pricing — especially during hot summer months. Demolition may be necessary in rare cases, and we do not include drywall or painting repairs in this service.

The minimum price for a standard ceiling box replacement is $240 and includes the upgraded box and installation. This ensures the box supports chandeliers up to 35 pounds. Lighter-weight plastic boxes may support less. For heavier chandeliers, we may recommend also installing a Chandelier Security Cable for added support.
